WE BADINGO es una ONG sin ánimo de lucro. Nuestro objetivo es plantar nuestra semilla fomentando la implicación comunitaria de las mujeres, así como garantizar el acceso a la educación y formación de todxs lxs niñxs y adolescentes. Creemos que es el mejor camino para cambiar el futuro de las comunidades.
Más del 60% de la población gambiana vive de la agricultura. Las mujeres representan más de la mitad de la fuerza de trabajo en este sector y generan el 40% de la producción agrícola total. La mayoría de mujeres en las zonas rurales de Gambia viven por debajo del umbral de pobreza, con menos de 1,25 dólares al día según la IFAD.
Amdalai tiene unos 800 habitantes que viven en 51 compounds (casas familiares). Es un pueblo rural situado a 25 km de Brikama, la tercera ciudad más importante del país.
La comunidad está integrada principalmente por tres etnias que conviven y se respetan; Fulas, Mandinkas y Diolas.
Todas las mujeres del pueblo pueden acceder a una pequeña parcela de tierra fértil dentro del huerto comunitario situado a las afueras de la localidad. Se reparten la tierra de manera rotativa y equitativa ya que algunas de las parcelas quedan más lejos de los pozos, otras no tienen tanto sol.
Por desgracia, las condiciones de trabajo de las mujeres en el huerto no son las óptimas ni las deseables teniendo en cuenta que de este trabajo se alimenta toda la comunidad. A nivel infraestructural el huerto tiene muchas carencias, como la falta de un sistema de cierre perimetral que no permita entrar a los animales que arrasan los cultivos, el hecho de tener un sistema de regadío precario que hace que las mujeres tengan que cargar con cubos de agua dañando sus cuerpos y generándoles contracturas musculares, además de algunas enfermedades a largo plazo irreversibles.
We Badingo pretende acompañar a unas 100 mujeres agricultoras de Amdalai.
Este primer proyecto se divide en tres fases:
1. Optimizar la mejora de las condiciones existentes del huerto comunitario y equiparlo con un sistema de cierre construido con materiales sostenibles y duraderos.
2. Construir un sistema de riego, instalar un sistema de placas solares con una bomba para facilitar la extracción del agua de los pozos, actualmente completamente manual, sin ni siquiera poleas.
3. Formar a las mujeres para la mejora de sus técnicas de cultivo. Enriquecerlas y modernizarlas en base a una agricultura más sostenible.
EL PROYECTO
Desde We Badingo queremos dar un pequeño empujón a esta comunidad a través de aportaciones económicas sobre el terreno. Éstas se van a utilizar directamente para comprar materiales para poder solucionar estos problemas de infraestructura, de manera que el huerto comunitario pueda dar más rendimiento a las mujeres que trabajan en él y a las familias que viven gracias a ello.
Empezaremos por la construcción del cercado del huerto (primera fase).
Si construimos el cierre perimetral, las mujeres podrán invertir más en semillas ya que no tendrán el riesgo de perder toda la cosecha a causa de los animales que se cuelan y arrasan con las verduras y hortalizas. Con esta inversión podrán sacar más alimentos del huerto y podrán tener excedente para vender y generar movimiento económico a nivel loca, para el beneficio de toda la comunidad. Si las mujeres ganan, gana la comunidad.
Con la ayuda de lxs jóvenes del pueblo, hemos podido obtener las medidas exactas del huerto, de 8000 m2 y elaborar un presupuesto a partir de los precios de los materiales, comprados a nivel local, necesarios para la construcción del vallado. Este constará de una base de obra a partir de cemento y, encima de esta, una red metálica. Los jóvenes del pueblo se han ofrecido a realizar la construcción ellos mismos bajo las órdenes de un constructor también del pueblo. Creen que es un bien comunitario y que por este motivo quieren aportar su semilla.
El diseño del cercado que se pretende construir ha sido diseñado y propuesto en su totalidad por las mujeres del huerto.
ES MUY IMPORTANTE CONSEGUIR EMPEZAR ANTES DE QUE EMPIECE LA ÉPOCA DE LLUVIAS. Queremos empezar con la construcción del muro de cemento, pues con la lluvia no se podrá llevar a cabo la construcción y por ende, deberemos de esperar hasta octubre que acaben las lluvias para empezar el proyecto.

Women represent more than half of the workforce in the agricultural sector in The Gambia, and generate 40% of the total production. Despite this, most of them live in poverty, having to make ends meet with less than 1,25 dollars a day according to IFAD.
Amdalai is a rural village with around 800 inhabitants, located 25km away from Brikama, the third most important city in the country. The community is integrated mainly by three ethnic groups that cohabit and respect each other: Fulas, Mandinkas and Diolas.
All women in the village can access a small plot of fertile land inside a common garden that is located just outside of the village. They share the land on a rotating basis and in an equitable manner, switching plots each year to make sure they all have equal opportunities at harvesting.
Unfortunately, the work conditions aren’t the most desirable. The garden has a lot of issues at an infrastructural level, like the lack of a perimeter closure system that prevents animals from entering it and destroying the crops, or a precarious watering system that makes women have to carry big water buckets, causing them irreversible pain.
We Badingo intends to support around 100 women in agriculture in Amdalai. This first project is divided into two phases:
Optimizing the improvement of the existing conditions in the communal garden and building an effective perimeter enclosure with sustainable and long-lasting materials.
Building a watering system: installing a water pump powered by solar panels to facilitate the extraction of water from the wells, which today is being done completely manually without even using a pulley system.
THE PROJECT
From We Badingo we want to encourage and bolster this community through financial aid. These contributions are going to be used directly to buy materials to solve these infrastructure problems so that the communal garden can become more profitable for the women who work on it and for the families whose livelihoods depend on it.
We will start by building the garden’s fence.
If we build this perimeter enclosure, women will be able to invest more in seeds without the risk of losing all of their harvests to predator animals. With this investment, they’ll be able to increase the garden’s food production, have a surplus to sell, and stimulate the local economy for the benefit of the whole community. If women win, the community wins.
With the help of the youth from the village, we have been able to obtain the garden’s exact measures (8000 m2) and to build a quote based on the cost of the materials needed to build the fence, which are going to be bought locally. This fence will consist of a base of cement with a metallic mesh on top. The young people of the village have volunteered to build it themselves under the supervision of a local contractor. They believe in the benefits this will bring to the community, which is why they want to collaborate.
The fence that will be built has been designed and proposed entirely by the women working in the garden.
We want to start the construction of the cement wall before the rainy season begins since rain would hinder the build process and the project would have to be delayed until October when the wet season ends.
